What you'll accomplish
By the end of this guide, you'll be able to upload a policy document (PDF) into Claude and ask specific coverage questions in plain language — getting answers that cite the relevant policy sections. Instead of spending 20–45 minutes hunting through a 60-page commercial policy, you'll have the relevant information in 5–10 minutes.
Important: Claude helps you find and understand policy language. It does not replace your judgment or your agency's E&O-covered coverage determinations. Always verify AI-identified policy sections before communicating coverage to a policyholder.
What you'll need
What you should see: The Claude Pro interface with a paperclip/attachment icon in the message input area — this means file upload is active.
Troubleshooting: If the PDF is locked or has copy restrictions, try printing it to PDF first, or ask if your carrier portal has a download option in a different format.
What you should see: A confirmation that the file was attached, usually shown as a small file icon near your message.
Type a specific question in plain language. Be as specific as possible:
Claude will:
What good output looks like: "Section III — Property Coverage, page 12, states: '[exact policy language].' Based on this language, a burst pipe that causes sudden and accidental water damage would typically be covered, but gradual leaks are excluded under the 'continuous or repeated seepage' exclusion on page 15."
Read the cited policy sections yourself to confirm Claude's interpretation is accurate. Then communicate the finding to the policyholder using your own words — you are the licensed professional providing the answer, not the AI.
For complex coverage questions, escalate to your agent or manager before responding — the document analysis is to help you understand the policy, not to replace the expertise required for coverage determinations.
Checking coverage for a specific incident type:
I've uploaded a [homeowners/commercial/auto] policy. Does this policy cover [describe the incident — e.g., "theft of a laptop from a locked vehicle"]? Cite the relevant coverage section and any applicable exclusions or sublimits.
Finding deductibles and coverage limits:
From this uploaded policy, tell me: (1) the deductible for [coverage type], (2) the coverage limit, and (3) whether there are any sublimits that might apply to [specific item/situation].
Comparing two policies:
I've uploaded two policies. Compare their [liability limits / exclusions / covered perils] and summarize the key differences in a table.
Finding renewal changes:
I've uploaded the renewal policy. What changed from the prior year? Look specifically for any new exclusions, coverage reductions, or limit changes compared to what I'd expect from a standard renewal.
