What you'll accomplish
By the end of this guide, you'll be using ChatGPT as an on-demand insurance coverage tutor — helping you understand policy concepts, prep for customer questions, study for your CISR designation, and build confidence explaining coverage to policyholders. This is especially valuable in your first 1–2 years when coverage knowledge is still developing.
What you'll need
Start a new conversation and tell ChatGPT your role so it calibrates its explanations appropriately:
Type: "I'm a new insurance CSR at an independent agency. I handle personal and commercial lines. Can you help me understand [specific coverage concept]? Explain it at a level for someone who's been in insurance about 1 year, not a licensed agent."
The most effective way to use this is just-in-time — after a call where a term came up that you didn't fully understand, ask ChatGPT about it before your next call.
Examples:
After getting an explanation, ask: "Quiz me on this with 3 multiple choice questions so I can check my understanding."
ChatGPT will generate quiz questions and explain your answers. This is far more efficient than reading a textbook and mirrors how CISR exam prep works.
The knowledge version and the customer explanation version are different. After understanding a concept yourself, ask:
"Now give me a 2–3 sentence explanation I could use on a phone call with a homeowner who's confused about this."
This bridges the gap between knowing something and being able to communicate it clearly under pressure.
When you get explanations you find particularly helpful, copy and paste them into a personal Notes document or Google Doc titled "Coverage Quick Reference." Build it over time as new concepts come up. This becomes your personalized cheat sheet.
Explain a coverage concept:
Explain [concept] to me as if I'm a 1-year insurance CSR. Include: what it is, when it comes up in day-to-day CSR work, and a real example. Keep it under 200 words.
Prepare for a customer question:
A policyholder might ask me: "[question you're worried about]." Help me understand the answer well enough to explain it, and give me a 2-sentence version I can use on the phone.
CISR exam prep:
I'm studying for my CISR designation. Quiz me on [coverage area — e.g., Commercial Property Insurance]. Give me 5 practice questions, then explain each answer after I respond.
Understand a specific exclusion:
Explain the [exclusion name] exclusion in [policy type]. What does it exclude, why does it exist, and when does it come up most often for a CSR?
